I remember frequently visiting this one particular patient. She had laid in our Medical ICU bed for several days, and finally, she learned how to breathe on her own with the trach and was released to the floor. Within a day or two, she experienced a setback and returned to our unit for another few weeks before being discharged to a long-term acute care center. During my numerous encounters with her, I observed her ride the emotional rollercoaster of her recovery, but she continuously maintained a perspective towards the future. Through this, she learned—with the Lord’s help—to maintain a hope towards the pending changes around the bend in her life.
